it is because a high surf situation in new zealand and it is affecting this area. there are three times as many lifeguards as normal on balboa and not letting folks in the watt fer they don't know who they are and don't know if they're experienced surfers and don't have the appropriate gear on. they're monitoring that very, very closely but those venturing out say it is sure worth it. >> the whole washing machine effect. you have heard. that upside down under water. and you start to lose your energy. and once you hit the beach, it is like, all right, i'm still alive. >> never underestimate the power of the ocean and don't turn your back on it. >> don't turn your back on it is right. and even the lifeguards are not turning their back on it. and even just the spectators out here, don't expect not to get wet because these waves are coming up so high that they're washing and crashing against the sand and shore and even soaking some of the spectators who are yards and yards away from that shoreline. so certainly a dangerous situation. but obviously, back out here live,

it's because of a storm way to the south of the bay area, in fact way out new zealand. what we're worried about is producing 1 day of an offshore flow until this area of low pressure digs to the south bringing us clouds from saturday through labor day, along the coast, with only partial clearing in the mid- 50s, otherwise sunshine away from the coast into the high 80s, which is quite seasonal. tomorrow, 89 degrees in san jose, from today's high of 84, 70s through san mateo, 70 at half moon bay, 91 degrees in pleasant hill and the further east you go we're talking 6 degrees in brentwood, discovery bay and in tracy 88 in napa, best in by some nome, a notice the coast with the clear sky, offshore flow into the 60, 70 degrees in san francisco. now the extended forecast has called for a slightly cooler day on saturday. looks like temperatures continue to go down from sunday through labor day into the upper 00s, and then we begin to see warmer weather on tuesday and wednesday, yes, surf is up. this picture was send to us by desiree lynch and she is from san jose, we thank you

high surf is caused by a swell that all started in new zealand. big waves are expected through the holiday weekend. >> not quite as big in the bay area but something to watch for. we'll see larger swells out at the coastline. but hey, it's going to be all about the sunshine around the bay area the next few days. we are starting out with just a couple of patches of fog at the coastline. clear skies already in the bay and the valleys and temperatures running warmer at this hour because we are seeing a little weak offshore wind kicking in. that will be strong enough to really heat things up. plenty of sunshine temperatures getting hot in the valleys up into the 90s. you will see plenty of 70s at oakland, 80s at the santa clara valley and sunshine and just a couple of patches of fog at the coast but temperatures there come in the 60s. broken clouds this morning, not much low clouds and fog. that's the way it will stay. high pressure is trapping the pollutants down below. it's a "spare the air" day. 99 in sacramento, 103 redding. 92 yosemite. 79 degree

we got some live pictures that show you the swells are created by an arctic storm off the coast of new zealand and the national weather service issued a high surf advisory for parts of southern california through tomorrow afternoon. and the waves could be as high as 15 feet. and it looks like a lot of people are enjoying it down in so cal. >>> lawrence, what are you still doing here? i thought you would want to rip it up with those guys. >> that is tempting but 15 feet, that is a mounten ous wave. >> a couple of patches of fog at ocean beach. trying to clear it up out there, but the big swell is not going to get to our coastline. but we are seeing plenty of sunshine elsewhere around the bay area and the temperatures are beginning to heat up outside as it looks like high pressure is taking over, and those offshore winds blowing and clearing out your skies to mount diablo. and looking good there and it looks like we are going to see temperatures in the 90s this afternoon. and in some of those valleys. right now, we are heating up in a hurry. 82 degrees in concord. and it is 68 in oakland
